Charities - Prospecting New Financial Sources
Often when charities face revenue shortfalls it is time to do some heart searching regarding the vision, mandate and goals of the organization. Questions need to be evaluated regarding these important areas. The evaluation should led to constructive steps to implement a plan. This article will deal with a very important aspect of a Charities operation. Strangely it is often neglected. Prospecting for new financial sources is part of the solution but unless proper planning and preparation goes into this it will not produce the results financially.
This article will cover the importance of preparing effective presentations when approaching potential donors. Let me briefly list some steps that should go into effective presentations. Presentations that could be reviewed by your email contacts, former and current donors, or to new prospective donors.
An effective presentation should be done in a format that will impress. This would include a well put together Power Point, Video/DVD with still photos and/or testimonials of people who benefit because of the charities activities. An effective presentation should include the charities vision, goals and its specific services or programs. It should also include how the prospective donor could benefit the charity through their donation whether in cash, goods or services. We will deal in another article on the subject of how a Business could benefit if it were to be supporter of the charity.
The last and very important detail of an effective presentation is how do donors give their donations. By the way, a charity should have a website. It’s value is great. Many prospective donors will search the web for information on your charity there before they contact the organization. If the charity has a website, donations could be done on line through a secure third party gateway. There are a number of these available for minimal monthly fees. A donor could also give in several other ways such as through the mail if you provide mailing instructions and envelopes. Donations can also be made electronically or sent by email from one Bank to another. It is surprising how many charities have not resourced these routine banking services. All of this needs to be part of the charities presentation.
A final word about presentations. Appoint someone who is an effective communicator in person or via another media such as a video or DVD. Most computers including laptops have very powerful video and DVD programs that will produce near professional quality products that can deliver an impressive package about the charity and its needs. The benefit of DVD or video presentations is that they can be edited numerous times if necessary to give you the quality and content you want.
I firmly believe that charities serve an important role in our troubled and needy world. Success comes when they are better equipped with fund raising solutions.
